Day 3
Today enjoy a day of leisure in the
beautiful Winelands region.
South Africa’s
fertile valleys are world famous for their crisp white and
classic French-style red wines. The country’s principal wine
routes are in the area of Paarl, Stellenbosch and
Franschhoek. The beautiful village
of Franschhoek, founded in 1688 by French immigrants
fleeing the Huguenot religious persecution in Europe, is
near the DrakensteinMountains. A memorial in the town
commemorates the arrival of these early settlers who helped
develop the wines sought after by Napoleon, Bismarck and
royalty such as Edward VII.

offers amazing arts, crafts, antique shops and galleries,
and the main streets are lined with coffee shops. Eight of
the ‘Top Ten’ restaurants are situated in Franschhoek which
is probably why it is often referred to as the gourmet
capital of
South Africa. Most of the
wine farms still bear their original French names, and have Cape
Dutch
homes, oak trees and sweeping vineyards. The area also
boasts a wide selection of wine cellars, from small wineries
to large cellars.
